extensive physical, mental, and financial damage from several incidents
including, but not limited to:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Our entire family’s
contraction of Covid-19.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Hub’s Covid-related heart
attack and ER admittance, start of multiple weekly and monthly doctor
appointments to manage severe health issues.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Our youngest’s admittance
to the ER, then Primary Children’s Hospital for severe health issues,
appendicitis, etc.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Hub’s suspension of work,
causing huge financial insecurity from which our family is still trying to
recover.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Near-complete isolation
due to Hub’s diagnosis of Long Covid.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Flooding and restoration of
our basement which displaced our family from July to November 2022.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">My breast cancer scare,
pregnancy, and severe illness September through December 2022.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Continued financial
insecurity, then Hub’s loss of work December 2022.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">My premature loss of
baby, surgery, and recovery December 2022 through January 2023.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;"> My returning to work in January due to Hub’s
continued Long Covid symptoms and our now-severe economic insecurity.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">All of these and more have caused a complete shift in
our home and family structure. Disasters are defined by multiple sources as
serious disruptions to the functioning of a family and/or community that
exceeds its capacity to cope using its own resources.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Our family has been pushed past our capacity to cope
over and over again.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">There are several phases of disaster recovery and we’re
taking steps in the process of becoming more stable again, adapting to our 'new normal'. But recovery takes time and resources, both of which our family
doesn’t have a lot of right now.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">We’re working on it. We’re moving forward. More details
are soon to come, but meanwhile, we’re having an estate sale. I’ve never done
anything like this before. I’ve never even participated in a yard sale.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">This lack of experience seems strange.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">But this new adventure is super exciting. And exhausting.
And I’m so grateful to those who’ve helped by donating their time, their water,
their love, their trucks.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">I’m looking forward to meeting new people and sharing
with them things we love. Niche paintings created by Hubs and our Littles.
Copper cups that are perfect for lounging outside during summer evenings.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">I hope, in return,
the people who visit our home can share stories and little pieces of their
lives. The joys, the confusions, the disasters, the recoveries. Their own ways of moving forward.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">I love stories. More so now than ever. If you feel like sharing, I'd like to hear a little piece of yours in the comments below.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

Deb Stevenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16419809243480266275noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098338657770100534.post-88101504859627403282023-05-24T00:00:00.002-06:002023-05-24T00:00:00.150-06:00Mindful May: Self-Care Ideas
So, for mindful May I'm sprinkling favorite things and good ideas.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">And then this:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Because there is so much magic embedded here. Yom.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">

Deb Stevenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16419809243480266275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098338657770100534.post-13983517249570150662023-01-28T13:30:00.001-07:002023-01-28T13:35:25.267-07:00Esther Remembered
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">This time, last month, I was four months pregnant.
Then there was blood, so much blood. And then I was no longer pregnant.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Now, I feel like so much is broken. My words are
broken.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">But this woman happened to be assigned as my nurse, and that is important.
There’s a piece of magic in that she was my nurse. I’m clutching this magic
like a spark in my hand, and I may not be able to use it now, because my heart still
hurts too much, but eventually I’ll loosen my grip and the spark will light
things up so I can see better.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Meanwhile, I want to share this woman’s story and her
song. I want to shed some light on the fact that so many women go through this.
I didn’t know before, but I know now, and I’ve felt deeply consoled by the
women who’ve shared bits of their own stories—bits of their shattered pieces—yet
they’ve found ways to heal, or to deal, and to continue finding joy and love.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I’ve not yet found ways to heal or deal, but here are
some pieces of gratitude I’ve been able to gather over the last month:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I’m grateful for the woman who cleaned the blood off
my legs. She didn’t have to, I could have done it, but she wiped my legs while
I wiped tears from my face.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I’m grateful for the woman who brought soup and
sourdough for my family. I could have done that too, but she coordinated things
in the background, so I didn’t have to.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I’m grateful for those who prayed for us, sent love
to us, condolences in texts and handwritten cards.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I’m grateful for children who hold my hand and wrap
their little arms around me, pressing their cheeks to mine.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I’m grateful for a husband who will cry with me because,
sometimes, that’s all we can do.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I’m grateful we were able to find out our baby’s
gender in December, and name her, and feel her close for a while.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I’m grateful I still feel Esther close, sometimes.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">To anyone else who’s gone through this, I’m so sorry.
I share this song, “Angels Remembered,” in hope that it helps.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">

Deb Stevenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16419809243480266275noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098338657770100534.post-83897903885904206502022-12-20T00:00:00.001-07:002022-12-20T00:00:00.201-07:00Promptful Tuesdays: Last line

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">In prep for 300 Thursdays, where I post bits of

We’re finishing up our
exploration of the L2B program, today, and thus far we’ve gone over these
themes:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">B: Body, learning to listen to our bodies

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">R: Reflect, reflecting on our thoughts

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">E: Emotions, we can surf the waves of our emotions

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">A: Attend, attend to what’s inside and outside of us

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">T: Tenderness, try some tenderness; take life as it is

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">H: Healthy habits; practicing healthy habits of mind

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Last, but not least, we have E: Empowered

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">When we learn to slow down and listen to our bodies,
reflect on our thoughts and emotions, attend to what’s inside and outside our
bodies, practice tenderness towards ourselves and others, then create healthy
habits so we continue to do all these things—this is when we feel empowered.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Which is not to say we’ll always feel successful in
doing all these things.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">But that’s when we practice any one of the themes some
more. Empowerment isn’t always succeeding, but rather always knowing we have
the tools to help us succeed.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">That knowledge is power.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">And you, my friends, are powerful. I wish light and
love and peace as you move more mindfully into your week.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">*If you’d like a way to put more

We’re
back to discussing L2B and thus far we’ve gone over these themes:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Today we go over H: Healthy habits; practicing healthy
habits of mind

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">So many times during our days we’re given external
cues from family, friends, teachers, co-workers, media, advertisements, etc.
Cues can be powerful things, poking us in just the right way to get us to do
something.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">We can do this for ourselves too, give ourselves
mindfulness cues. Here’s a worksheet of suggestions.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">And here’s a video about healthy habits of mind.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">
Putting these together, what are things we can do to
help us create habits of healthy living, healthy thinking, being more mindful?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I would love to hear your thoughts.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">The Davis Behavioral Health L2B team has put together
a series of cards that can be found here. The cards have questions or prompts

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">These are great journaling prompts to get us delving
into our hearts and minds so we have more positive go-to thoughts when things
start to spiral up or down or out of control.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">May we never be out of control. That feeling’s the

We’re
working through the L2B program and so far we’ve done these themes:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">B: Body, learning to listen to our bodies

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">R: Reflect, reflecting on our thoughts

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">E: Emotions, we can surf the waves of our emotions

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">So, today we are at A: Attend, attend to what’s inside
and outside of us

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">For this, I’m simply going to borrow from here, a memo
from the Body-Mind to all Body-Mind Owners:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">
And now, what do we do with this? Slow down, be more
mindful and present with everything.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Mindful eating includes paying attention to sensations
as we eat; practicing gratitude for all the people whose work made it possible
for us to eat this food.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Mindful walking includes paying attention to movements
of our muscles, our lungs, our arms swinging, our hips swaying; practicing
gratitude for our abilities to move in whatever way we can.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Mindfully going into this week includes paying
attention to our intensions and what we hope/plan to do, closing our eyes and
seeing how things will play out; practicing gratitude for our skills,
abilities, and all the people in our lives whose work make it possible for us
to likewise work toward what we want to do.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I am wishing this for you, my friends, that your week
is blessed and full of peace and love as you move more mindfully through.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">

thoughts. To reflect on them more objectively—thoughts are just thoughts—and to
replace them, when needed, with more helpful and/or productive thoughts. Spots,
affirmations, positive thinking. There are so many tools available to help us
reorganize our brains. Here we are
again. Let’s reflect on the power of thoughts again.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Years ago, one of my good friends introduced me to RecoveryInternational. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, baby. This is wonderful stuff. I’m
not going to go into depth, here, but if you want tools to identify and change
your thought processes and patterns, look into cognitive behavioral training
(or retraining?).

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I bring up Recovery International specifically because
they incorporate these things called ‘Spots’ that help you replace the negative
or unhealthy thoughts and feelings with more useful and positive thoughts or
feelings. Phrases you can use to remind yourself in the moment, or on the spot,
that will support your mental health and wellbeing.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Some examples include:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">“Any decision will steady you.” –for those moments you
just don’t know what to do, and emotions can well up and even paralyze you. Making
a decision will help you move forward, and any outcome becomes a learning
opportunity.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">“Fear is a belief—beliefs can be changed.” –oh, yes, I
know this one well. I need to practice it almost daily. And then…

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">“Muscles can be commanded to do what one fears to do.”
–right? So if I can’t wrap my brain around changing my fear-belief, and I still
feel stuck, I can command my muscles. Refocus my attention. Do.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">“Humor is our best friend, temper is our enemy.” –this
is one of my favorites. I love this one. Humor can fix almost anything.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">So, my friends, what are your thoughts about all this?
About any of the above, or anything else that helps keep your brain boat
afloat?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">As always, I hope something in here helps you this
morning, this evening, whenever you’re reading this. And I wish you peace and love
as you move more mindfully into this week.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">

Deb Stevenshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16419809243480266275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2098338657770100534.post-68323594269913321862022-10-18T00:00:00.001-06:002022-10-18T00:00:00.190-06:00Promptful Tuesdays: Singing Bones

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">In prep for 300 Thursdays, where I post bits of
original work written in 300 words or less, I’m putting up prompts on Tuesdays
to get my brain-brew percolating.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Join me, if you wish:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">1. Use the prompt to scribble, write, type up
something original—flash fiction, short essays, poetry or prose, lyrics,
teasers from novels, etc. Keep it 300 words or less.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">2. Post by Thursday and hashtag #kickingcorners300,
and/or share in my comments below to link up.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">3. Come back next week and do it all again.
